Keto for Beginners Singapore: Start Here, Sister

Bismillah. You have heard the word keto. Maybe from a friend, maybe from a doctor, maybe at 2am on your phone. Nobody has told you plainly what it is or what you actually do tomorrow morning. Let me do that.

I lost 40kg on keto. Before that I spent years being told to eat less and move more, and years watching my body ignore every bit of it.

The advice was not wrong because I was lazy. It was wrong because it never touched the chemistry.

So here is the beginner's version, with nothing hidden behind a paywall and nothing you need to buy.

What keto actually is, in one paragraph

Your body has two fuels it can run on. Sugar, and fat.

Sugar is the easy one, so while there is sugar available your body will always reach for it first. Every time you eat carbohydrate, rice, bread, noodles, kuih, sweet drinks, it becomes sugar in your blood, and your pancreas sends out insulin to pack that sugar away.

Keto means eating few enough carbohydrates that the easy fuel runs out. When it does, your body switches over and starts burning fat instead. That is the whole idea.

Not a detox. Not a cleanse. A fuel switch.

The only three numbers you need

NumberWhat it means
20gNet carbohydrate per day. This is the only number that decides whether the switch happens. Net carbohydrate means total carbohydrate minus fibre.
2 to 4 daysHow long the switch usually takes once you are consistently under 20g.
1 cupOne cup of cooked white rice carries roughly 45g of carbohydrate. More than two days of your allowance, in one scoop. This is why the rice leaves first.

You do not need to count protein or fat in your first month. Eat protein until you are satisfied and do not fear the fat. Counting everything on day one is how beginners quit by day five.

What leaves the plate, and what stays

This is the part that surprises sisters. Almost nothing you love has to go.

LeavesStays
White rice, brown rice, briyaniRendang, ayam, daging, ikan, sotong, udang
Mee, bihun, kway teow, bread, rotiSantan, coconut oil, ghee, butter, olive oil
Kuih, cake, biscuits, ice creamTelur, cheese, nuts in small amounts
Teh tarik, milo, bandung, bubble tea, juicePlain water, plain tea, kopi O kosong
Potato, sweet potato, corn, pumpkinSayur, kangkung, bayam, brinjal, cauliflower, timun
Sugar in the sambal and the gravyCili, bawang, kunyit, serai, belacan, asam, rempah

Read the right-hand column again. That is your heritage, almost entirely intact. The rendang was never the enemy. The rice was.

Your first seven days, honestly

DayWhat usually happensWhat to do
1 to 2You feel fine, maybe hungry between meals. The body is still burning its stored sugar.Eat protein until satisfied. Drink more water than feels normal.
3 to 4Headache, tiredness, short temper, maybe cramps at night. This is the part people quit on.Salt your food properly. A pinch of salt in a glass of water helps. This is not keto hurting you.
5 to 6The fog lifts. Energy steadies. The 3pm crash stops arriving.Keep going. Do not celebrate with kuih.
7Clothes feel different before the scale moves. Bloat is usually the first thing to go.Take a waist measurement, not a weight.

The keto flu is not the keto. It is the salt.

When insulin drops, your kidneys release sodium, and water follows the sodium out.

That is why day three feels like a flu. You are not detoxing and your body is not in trouble. You are low on salt and water at the same time.

Salt your food properly and drink more than you think you need, and most sisters sail through the week that would otherwise have ended their attempt.

Your first time eating out

You will be at a hawker centre or a kenduri within the first week. Nobody needs to know you are doing anything.

WhereWhat to order
Chicken rice"Tak nak nasi." Chicken, extra vegetables, chilli, soup.
Nasi padangThe lauk without the nasi. Rendang, ayam, sayur lodeh, telur.
Yong tau fooSoup version, no noodles, no sweet sauce.
SatayThe meat. Leave the ketupat and go light on the peanut sauce.
KenduriFill the plate with meat and sayur first, so there is no room left to argue about.

If someone asks, you do not owe anyone a lecture. "I am eating this way for my health" closes the subject faster than any explanation.

Three things you can apply tonight, free

1. Take the rice off tonight's plate. Keep everything else.

Why: white rice turns to glucose in your blood within ten to fifteen minutes and calls insulin to store it. The rendang beside it does not. The santan does not. Only the rice does. One change, tonight, nothing bought.

2. Salt your food properly, starting tonight.

Why: the tiredness and headache that make beginners quit on day three are a salt and water problem, not a carbohydrate problem. Salting deliberately from day one usually means day three never arrives.

3. Measure your waist tonight, and put the scale away for two weeks.

Why: in the first fortnight your body is losing stored water and rebuilding muscle at the same time, so the scale tells you almost nothing and will talk you out of something that is working. Your waist tells the truth earlier and more honestly.

A sister's words, unprompted

"Your food never spike any glucose levels. It's really keto compared to others. And taste is good."

How to tell it is working, without the scale

The scale is the slowest and least honest signal you have. These come first.

Questions beginners ask me most

Do I have to do this forever?

No. The goal is not dependence on me or on any plan. The goal is that you understand your own chemistry well enough to make your own decisions. Independent CEO of your own body.

Can I do keto if I have PCOS, diabetes or high blood pressure?

Many sisters come to me with exactly those. Speak to your doctor first, especially if you take medication for blood sugar or blood pressure, because those doses sometimes need adjusting as your food changes. Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own.

Is keto halal?

Keto is a way of eating, not a product. Everything in this article is ordinary halal food cooked the way our kitchens already cook it.

What if I fall off on day nine?

Then day ten starts again. Nothing is ruined. Not because of one meal. Because of every meal.

Qur'an 2 : 286
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
La yukallifu Allahu nafsan illa wus'aha
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear."

The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
