Why keto looks expensive
Search the word keto and you will see almond flour, imported snacks, special bread, fancy oils and powders in small expensive tubs. No wonder sisters think healing is only for people with money to spare.
None of that is keto. It is marketing. Keto is simply eating protein, natural fat and vegetables, and leaving out the rice, sugar and flour that keep your blood sugar on a rollercoaster. Our grandmothers' kitchens were already full of it.
Rendang was never the expensive part of the plate. The rice mountain beside it was the costly part, just not at the cashier.
What you stop buying
Before we talk about what keto adds, look at what it takes away. Most sisters never add this side of the bill up.
- Sweet drinks. Teh tarik, kopi, Milo, bandung, bubble tea. Two or three a day, every day, quietly becomes one of the biggest food costs in the month.
- Kuih and teatime snacks. The goreng pisang at 4pm, the biscuits in the drawer, the cake at the office.
- Bread, roti and instant noodles. Cheap per packet, but bought again and again because they never keep you full.
- The second round. When a meal is mostly rice, you are hungry again two hours later and buying something else.
A plate built on protein and fat keeps you full for hours. Fewer cravings means fewer purchases. Many sisters are surprised that their weekly spending drops in the first month, not rises.
What you buy instead
The keto basket in Singapore is ordinary. It is the wet market and the supermarket you already go to.
- Eggs. The cheapest clean protein there is. A tray of 30 at FairPrice is usually around S$6.45, about 22 cents an egg.
- Chicken. Thighs and drumsticks are cheaper than breast and better for keto because they carry their own fat. Frozen chicken is usually around S$6 a kilo.
- Fish and sotong. Ikan kembung, selar and sotong at the wet market are kind to the purse.
- Sayur. Kangkung, sawi, kacang panjang, cabbage, timun. All cheap, all keto.
- Natural fat. Santan, ghee, butter and coconut oil, plus pomace olive oil for frying.
- Your rempah. Bawang, cili, serai, kunyit, halia. You already own most of them.
- A rice swap. Cauliflower or konjac rice instead of white rice. This is the one line that costs a little more, and it is the one that does the most work.
On most days a home-cooked keto plate of eggs or chicken, sayur and a rice swap costs about the same as the hawker plate you would have bought anyway. You spend a little more on protein and the rice swap, and a lot less on drinks, snacks and second rounds.
Where keto gets expensive for no reason
This is where sisters lose money and gain nothing.
- Packaged "keto" snacks and bars. Expensive, imported, and often full of sweeteners that keep your sweet tooth alive.
- Keto bread, keto cookies, keto desserts. Trying to recreate the old food with costly flours. Heal first. Treats can wait.
- Supplement stacks. Powders and pills sold as shortcuts. Real food first, always.
- Starting and stopping. The most expensive keto is the keto you do for four days, quit, and start again next month.
Three ways to do keto in Singapore, and what each costs
1. You cook it yourself
The cheapest way, and the one that asks the most of your time. You plan, shop, cook and pack. If you want someone beside you while you learn, Beside You . Coach Kyla is four weeks of private coaching for your own kitchen, S$450.
2. You eat keto at the hawker centre
Very doable. At economy rice or nasi padang, say "tak nak nasi", then pick two or three lauk with protein and sayur. An economy rice plate in Singapore is commonly around S$3.50 to S$5.50 for two dishes, so you pay roughly what you always paid. Skip the sweet drink and you are already ahead.
3. Someone cooks it for you
For the sister with no time, no energy, or a family to feed first. This is where I come in. Satu Pinggan is one fresh keto plate a day, Monday to Friday, S$250 for the week. The 4-Week Total Transformation is every meal cooked for you plus private WhatsApp coaching, S$1,500.
Our prices are set to cover the cooking, the fresh ingredients and the delivery, not to make healing a luxury. Profit is a gift from Allah. The plate is the work.
This is food and money talk, not a diagnosis, and I am a keto coach, not your doctor. If you take medication for diabetes or blood pressure, eating this way can change your numbers quickly, so speak to your doctor first. And never stop or change your medication on your own.
Three things you can do tonight, for free
You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.
1. Add up one week of drinks and snacks.
Look back at the last seven days. Every teh tarik, every kuih, every bubble tea. Write the total down.
Why: that number is the budget keto quietly gives back to you. Most sisters find it is more than the extra cost of better protein.
2. Boil six eggs tonight.
Keep them peeled in the fridge for tomorrow's breakfast and teatime.
Why: at around 22 cents each, an egg is the cheapest full-stop to hunger in Singapore. When protein is ready in the fridge, you stop buying snacks on the way home.
3. Write tomorrow's grocery list without the "keto" aisle.
Eggs, chicken thighs, fish, two kinds of sayur, santan, bawang and cili. That is it.
Why: healing lives in the ordinary aisles. If it needs the word keto on the packet, you probably do not need it.
Do those three things and you will know, in your own numbers, whether keto costs you more. For most sisters, it does not. May Allah put barakah in your rezeki, Amin.
The kitchen is here when you are ready, sister.

Questions sisters ask me
Is keto more expensive than a normal diet in Singapore?
Not if you build it on ordinary food. Eggs, chicken, fish, sayur and santan are everyday groceries. What usually costs more is the packaged food labelled keto, which you do not need.
What is the cheapest protein for keto in Singapore?
Eggs. A tray of 30 at FairPrice is usually around S$6.45, which is about 22 cents an egg. Frozen chicken is also budget friendly at around S$6 a kilo.
Can I do keto at a hawker centre?
Yes. At economy rice or nasi padang, ask for no rice and choose two or three lauk with protein and sayur. You usually pay the same, or less, than a normal plate.
Do I need keto snacks, keto bread or special sweeteners?
No. They are the most expensive part of keto and the least necessary. Real food is enough, and it is what heals.
How much does a keto meal plan delivery cost in Singapore?
At Kyla With Keto, Satu Pinggan is S$250 for a week of one fresh plate a day, and the 4-Week Total Transformation with private WhatsApp coaching is S$1,500. Both are paid by PayNow only.
The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
