I have watched sisters download a keto meal plan, read the word "zucchini noodles" on day one, and quietly close the file.
Not because they are weak. Because the plan asked them to stop being Malay.
So let me give you the real thing. The numbers, a full week, the swaps, and three things you can do tonight without paying anyone a cent.
What a keto meal plan actually has to do
Strip away the marketing and a keto meal plan has only three jobs.
| The job | The number | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Drop the carbohydrate | Around 20g net per day | Below this your body stops reaching for glucose and starts burning fat for fuel. |
| Hold the protein | Roughly a palm size at every meal | Protein protects your muscle while you lose fat. Muscle is what keeps your metabolism alive at 45. |
| Let fat be the fuel | Whatever fills you up | Santan, ghee, coconut oil. Fat is the thing that makes the plan survivable past Wednesday. |
Now sit with the first number for a moment, sister.
One cup of cooked white rice carries about 45g of carbohydrate. Your entire daily allowance is 20g. That single cup is more than double your whole day, and most of us were never eating only one cup.
This is the whole answer to the question everybody asks me. Low carb is not keto. A plan at 100g a day is a low carb plan, and it will keep you parked just outside fat burning for months while you wonder what you are doing wrong.
Why most keto plans fail in Singapore specifically
They remove the culture instead of the chemistry.
A plan built in California tells you to eat salmon and asparagus. Then Sunday comes, your mother cooks, the family is at the table, and the plan has given you nothing to eat and nothing to say. So you eat the nasi, you feel the shame, and by Tuesday you have quit.
Here is what took me years to understand, and it changed everything.
In a Malay meal, almost all of the carbohydrate is in the rice, the kuih, and any sugar hiding in the sambal. It is not in the rendang. It is not in the santan. It is not in the rempah. The food our grandmothers cooked was, by accident of tradition, almost perfectly keto. We just built a mountain of white rice next to it.
A real week, not a fantasy week
This is the shape of a working halal keto week in Singapore. One main plate a day, heritage food, cauliflower rice underneath instead of nasi.
| Day | The plate | What it is doing |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Ayam Penyet | High protein, no sugar in the sambal, easy start to the week. |
| Tuesday | Udang Lemak Cili Api | Santan carries the fat. Prawn keeps the protein high and the meal light. |
| Wednesday | Daging Masak Cili | Red meat midweek for iron and satiety, the day cravings usually bite. |
| Thursday | Sotong Masak Kunyit Cili Api | Turmeric for inflammation. Squid is protein with almost no carbohydrate at all. |
| Friday | Cauli Goreng Kampung Ikan Bilis | The Friday plate that tastes like nasi goreng and is not nasi goreng. |
Notice what is not on that list. No boiled chicken. No steamed broccoli. No zucchini noodles.
Notice also what else is not there. No rice, no kuih, no teh tarik, no sweetened sambal.
Menus move with the market, sister. Fresh ingredients are not always available, and I would rather change a dish than compromise one.
The swap list. What goes, what stays.
| Goes | Stays |
|---|---|
| White rice, nasi lemak rice, briyani | Cauliflower rice, konjac rice |
| Kuih, kaya toast, biscuits | Rendang, sambal, ayam goreng |
| Teh tarik, kopi susu, bandung | Kopi O kosong, teh O kosong, plain water |
| Sugar in the sambal and marinade | Santan, ghee, coconut oil, buah keras |
| Mee, kuey teow, bihun, roti | Sayur, kangkung, long beans, cabbage |
| Bottled sauces, satay sauce | Rempah you cooked yourself |
Read the right hand column again. That is not a diet. That is your mother's kitchen with the rice pot moved out of the room.
Three things you can apply tonight, free
You do not need my kitchen to start this. You need tonight.
1. Take the rice off tonight's plate. Keep everything else.
Why: white rice converts to glucose in your blood within about ten to fifteen minutes of swallowing. The rendang beside it does not. Removing one thing removes nearly all of the spike, and you have changed nothing about how the meal tastes.
2. Walk ten minutes after you eat. Not before. After.
Why: working muscle can pull glucose out of your blood without waiting for insulin to carry it. You are disposing of the sugar before your body has to store it. Ten minutes around the block, after dinner, costs nothing and it is the single most underrated thing in metabolic health.
3. Put the phone face down and shut the kitchen by 9pm.
Why: one short night raises your cortisol, and cortisol raises your blood sugar before you have eaten a single thing. The craving you fight at 4pm tomorrow is very often decided at 1am tonight. I wrote the longer version of this in Keto and Sleep.
"Your food never spike any glucose levels. It's really keto compared to others. And taste is good."
Anonymous sister, WhatsApp, consent on record.
How to know the plan is working, without the scale
The scale lies for the first three weeks, sister. It lies about water, it lies about your cycle, and it has made more women quit than any plate of food ever has.
Watch these instead.
- The 3pm crash. It usually goes first, often inside a week. When you stop needing a nap after lunch, your insulin is already behaving differently.
- Your waistband. Not the number on the scale. The way your kurung sits at the waist.
- Cravings. True keto quietens the 9pm hunt through the kitchen. If you are still hunting, your carbohydrate is probably higher than you think.
- Sleep. Fewer 3am wakings. Blood sugar stability at night is a real thing.
- Fasting insulin. Ask your doctor for it by name at your next blood test. Not just glucose, not just HbA1c. Fasting insulin tells the story years earlier than either of them, and almost nobody orders it unless you ask.
Cooking it yourself, or having it cooked
I will be honest with you, because it costs me nothing to be.
Everything above is yours. You can run this plan out of your own kitchen with no help from me, and plenty of sisters do. If you cook anyway, if you enjoy the rempah, if your Saturday has room in it, then do that. May Allah make it easy for you.
But I know why most sisters stall, because I lived it. It is not the knowledge. It is the Sunday. Four rempah pastes, the marinades, the cauliflower, the washing up, and a baby on your hip. The plan does not usually die from ignorance. It dies from Sunday.
So the kitchen exists for the sister who needs the cooking taken off her hands.
| Door | What it is |
|---|---|
| 4 Week Total Transformation . S$1,500 | This is the one I stand behind. Four full weeks of my food, private WhatsApp coaching the whole way, and my books included. Four weeks is where I have watched almost every sister who ate only my food see her body answer, biiznillah. |
| Satu Pinggan . S$250 weekly | One week, one plate a day. A taste of the kitchen before you commit to anything. |
| Shifa Room . S$4,200 | Twelve weeks, private, application only. For the sister whose insulin needs more time than four weeks. |
| The books . from S$5.90 | If you would rather read first and decide second. That is a respectable way to start. |
Zero preservatives, which is a real constraint and I say it plainly. The food must be refrigerated within about two hours of the drop, or collected at your workplace. It also happens to be the whole reason your body responds to it.
I cook. You eat.
