Keto at the Hawker Centre: What to Order in Singapore

Bismillah. "Coach, I cannot cook every day. I eat at the hawker centre. Does that mean I cannot do keto?"

Sister, the hawker centre is not your enemy. Most halal stalls already cook protein and vegetables beautifully. The problem was never the stall. It was the mound of rice, the noodles and the sweet drink that came with it. Here is how to order, stall by stall.

Four rules that work at any stall

You do not need to memorise a list. Carry these four, and you can walk into any halal hawker centre in Singapore and eat well.

1. Build the plate around protein.

Chicken, beef, fish, sotong, prawns, eggs. Choose your protein first and let it be the centre of the plate. Protein keeps you full and asks very little of your insulin.

2. Say "no rice", out loud, every time.

No rice, no noodles, no bread, no ketupat. One sentence at the counter does more for your blood sugar than any supplement. Ask for extra vegetables instead.

3. Choose curried, grilled, steamed or soup.

Lemak, asam, gulai, bakar, kukus, soto. These cook the protein in spice, santan or broth. Batter and flour coatings are where hidden carbs hide.

4. Watch the sweet sauces.

Kicap manis, sweet chilli, peanut sauce and the dark sauce on chicken rice can carry a surprising amount of sugar. Ask for them on the side, or skip them.

Protein. Healthy fat. No spike. The stall does not change. Your order does.

Stall by stall: what to order

Nasi padang and nasi campur

This is your best friend. Point at two proteins and two vegetables, and ask for no rice. Rendang, ayam masak merah, sambal sotong, ikan asam pedas, sayur lodeh, kangkung, cabbage, a fried egg. Go easy on dishes cooked dark and glossy in kicap manis, and on anything coated in batter.

Chicken rice

Order the roasted or steamed chicken on its own, with no rice. Add a braised or fried egg and a plate of vegetables. Keep the chilli and ginger, and leave the sweet dark sauce on the side.

Soto and sup

Soto ayam, sup tulang, sup kambing. Ask for the bowl without noodles, lontong or nasi impit, and ask for extra meat if the stall allows. Broth, protein and spice is a warm, filling meal.

Ayam penyet and ikan penyet

Fried chicken or fish, smashed with sambal. Skip the rice, keep the sambal, cucumber and cabbage. If the chicken is coated in thick batter, peel it off, or choose the fish.

Yong tau foo

Choose the clear soup version with no noodles. Pick tofu, eggs, vegetables and any plain meat or fish pieces. Many of the processed balls and fried pieces contain flour, so keep those to a few, and skip the sweet sauce.

Satay

The grilled meat is fine. Skip the ketupat, which is rice, take only a small amount of peanut sauce because it usually has sugar, and add the cucumber and onion.

Indian Muslim stalls

Mutton curry, chicken curry, fish head curry, tandoori chicken and vegetable sides can all work. Order the curry with vegetables and no rice, no prata, no naan and no briyani.

The science, plainly

White rice, noodles and bread are digested into sugar quickly, and your body answers with a wave of insulin. Protein and fat barely move your blood sugar. So the same stall can give you a plate that spikes you, or a plate that keeps you steady until dinner. The difference is what you leave in the pot.

What to walk past

This is not forever, sister. This is while your body heals.

The drinks stall

A plate with no rice can still be undone by the cup next to it. Teh tarik, Milo, sweet kopi, bandung and fruit juice carry a lot of sugar in a few sips, and sugar in a cup reaches your blood faster than sugar on a plate.

Order plain water, plain tea or plain coffee with no sugar and no condensed milk. If you want to understand why the cup matters so much, my teh tarik and kopi article walks through it.

Sister, hear me

This is food and mechanism, not medical advice, and I am a keto coach, not your doctor. If you take medication for diabetes, cutting the rice and noodles can lower your blood sugar faster than you expect, so speak to your doctor first. And never stop or change your medication on your own.

Three things you can do tonight, for free

You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.

1. Write your order in your phone.

Open your notes and write the order for the stall you visit most. For example: "Roasted chicken, no rice, add egg, add vegetables, sauce on the side."

Why: at the counter, with a queue behind you and the smell of rice in the air, old habits win. A sentence you decided at home, calmly, wins instead.

2. Change one drink.

Next time you order teh or kopi, ask for it with no sugar and no condensed milk, or take plain water.

Why: the cup is often the biggest sugar load of the whole meal, and it is the easiest one to change.

3. Walk ten minutes after you eat.

After your hawker meal, walk around the block or take the long way back before you sit down.

Why: working muscles take sugar out of your blood on their own, so a short walk after a meal helps your body clear it before insulin has to work hard.

Do those three this week and the hawker centre becomes a place you heal, not a place you fall. May Allah make it easy for you, Amin.

If you want someone to cook it for you

The hawker centre can work. But ordering around the rice every single day is tiring, and on a busy day, the rice usually wins.

That is why I cook. Kyla With Keto is Singapore's first and only halal keto nasi campur. Heritage Malay and Indonesian dishes, protein at the centre, cooked fresh daily with zero artificial preservatives, served on konjac rice instead of a rice mound. No ordering around anything. I do the heavy lifting. You eat.

Questions sisters ask me

Can I eat at a hawker centre on keto?

Yes. Most halal hawker stalls already cook protein and vegetables. Ask for no rice, no noodles and no bread, choose grilled, curried or soup dishes over battered ones, and drink water or unsweetened tea or coffee.

Is chicken rice keto?

The chicken can be, the rice is not. Order the roasted or steamed chicken without rice, add an egg and a plate of vegetables, and leave the sweet dark sauce on the side.

Is nasi padang keto friendly?

It can be one of the best choices. Pick two proteins and two vegetables, ask for no rice, and go easy on dishes cooked in sweet kicap.

Is satay keto?

The meat is fine. The peanut sauce usually has sugar and the ketupat is rice, so skip the ketupat, take a small amount of sauce, and add cucumber and onion.

What can I drink at the kopitiam on keto?

Water, plain tea or plain coffee with no sugar and no condensed milk. Teh tarik, Milo, sweet kopi and juices carry a lot of sugar in one cup.
