Skin is the one thing you cannot hide.
You can hide a tired body under loose clothes. You can hide a number on a scale. You cannot hide a face that is breaking out, or arms a sister keeps covered in the heat, or a daughter who has stopped believing anything will help.
I am not a dermatologist and this article does not replace one. But I have watched enough sisters and their families eat from my kitchen to know that skin is often the first thing that changes, and it changes before the scale does.
Here is the mechanism, honestly, with what to do tonight.
Skin is an organ, and it is downstream
We treat skin like a surface, so we treat it from the outside. Cream on top of the problem.
But skin is an organ, fed by your blood, built from what you eat, and it is one of the places inflammation shows up first because it renews so fast.
So the question is not only "what do I put on it". The question is also "what is arriving in the blood that feeds it".
What insulin does to skin
Three mechanisms, and all three are in a normal Singapore diet.
| What goes in | What happens in the skin |
|---|---|
| High blood sugar, repeatedly | Insulin rises. Insulin raises a growth hormone called IGF-1, which tells oil glands to produce more oil and tells skin cells to multiply faster. More oil plus faster shedding equals blocked pores. |
| Seed oils, heated | Soybean, sunflower, corn and canola oils are high in omega-6. Heated at wok temperature they oxidise, and that pushes the body's inflammatory balance in one direction. Inflamed skin is skin that itches and stays red. |
| Sugar bound to protein | Excess sugar in the blood attaches to collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin springy. Once attached, those fibres stiffen. This is part of why skin ages faster when blood sugar runs high for years. |
None of this means food is the only cause. Eczema has genetic and environmental drivers, and acne has hormonal ones. But every one of these three is something you control at dinner.
Eczema specifically
Eczema is an inflammatory condition with a barrier problem. The skin leaks moisture out and lets irritants in, and the immune system reacts.
You cannot change the genetics. You can change how much fuel you are handing the inflammation.
The things most worth removing first, in order of how often they matter:
- Sweet drinks. Teh tarik, milo, bandung, packet juice, bubble tea. Liquid sugar hits the blood fastest and nothing slows it down.
- Ultra-processed snacks. Biscuits, keropok, instant noodles, anything with a long ingredient list. Usually seed oil plus sugar plus flour in one packet.
- Seed oils at home. The oil you fry in every day matters more than the oil you eat once a month at a kenduri.
Notice what is not on that list. Not the rendang. Not the santan. Not the ikan. The things that calm skin are usually the things we were already cooking before the packets arrived in our kitchens.
Acne specifically
If you have acne alongside irregular cycles, facial hair, or weight that sits around your middle, read the PCOS article next, because they share one root.
The chain is simple. Carbohydrate raises blood sugar. Blood sugar raises insulin. Insulin raises IGF-1 and androgens. Those raise oil production. Oil plus faster skin turnover blocks the pore, and the bacteria that were always there finally have somewhere to live.
That is why acne so often appears at the same time as the 3pm crash, the belly fat and the cravings. It is not a coincidence. It is the same hormone wearing a different face.
What to take off the plate, and what stays
| Take off | Keep |
|---|---|
| Sweet drinks of every kind | Plain water, plain tea, kopi O kosong |
| Soybean, sunflower, corn, canola oil | Coconut oil, ghee, butter, olive oil |
| White rice, bread, mee, kuih | Fish, especially oily fish. Eggs. Chicken. Beef. |
| Biscuits, keropok, instant noodles | Sayur, kangkung, bayam, brinjal, timun |
| Sugar added to the sambal and gravy | Kunyit, cili, bawang, serai, belacan, santan |
Kunyit deserves a line of its own. Turmeric has been in our pots for generations, and the compound in it is one of the better studied anti-inflammatory foods on earth. Your nenek was not treating her skin. She just cooked that way.
Three things you can apply tonight, free
1. Change the oil you cook in, starting with tonight's dinner.
Why: seed oils oxidise at wok heat and push the body's inflammatory balance in the wrong direction, and the oil you use daily matters far more than any single meal. Same sambal, same heat, different fat, different chemistry. Coconut oil or ghee, nothing else needs to change.
2. Cut every sweet drink for fourteen days. Water and plain tea only.
Why: sugar in liquid reaches your blood faster than sugar in food, because there is no fibre, fat or protein slowing it down. One glass can spike you harder than the whole plate beside it. If you change one thing for your skin, change this.
3. Photograph the skin tonight, in the same light, and do not look again for two weeks.
Why: skin changes too slowly for a mirror to show you, and checking daily will convince you nothing is working when it is. Same spot, same light, two weeks apart. That is the only honest comparison there is.
How long it takes, honestly
| When | What usually moves |
|---|---|
| Week 1 to 2 | Itch settles first. Often the earliest sign anything is changing. |
| Week 3 to 4 | Redness and flare frequency come down. Fewer bad nights. |
| Week 6 to 12 | Texture and marks. Skin turns over slowly, so this part cannot be rushed. |
Anyone promising you clear skin in seven days is selling you something. Give it a month before you judge it.
Please read this part before you change anything
I am a certified keto coach. I am not a doctor, and skin is one place where that line matters more than usual.
- Do not stop a prescribed cream, steroid or medication because you changed your food. Food works alongside your treatment, not instead of it.
- See a doctor if skin is weeping, crusting, spreading fast, or if there is fever. That can be infection, and food will not touch it.
- Children are not small adults. A growing child should never be put on a restrictive diet without medical supervision. Removing added sugar, sweet drinks and packet snacks is a different thing entirely from putting a child on keto, and only the first belongs in a home without a doctor involved.
- If you are pregnant or nursing, speak to your own team before changing how you eat.

Questions sisters ask me about skin
Is it dairy?
For some people, yes, particularly milk rather than cheese or butter. If you want to test it, remove it completely for three weeks and then reintroduce it on its own. Testing one thing at a time is the only way to learn anything.
Will my skin get worse before it gets better?
Some people see a short flare in the first week or two. It usually settles. If it worsens and keeps worsening, stop and see your doctor.
Can I still eat santan?
Yes. Coconut is a saturated fat and does not drive the insulin response that sugar and refined carbohydrate do. The santan article covers this properly.
What if nothing changes?
Then you have learned something real, and you have lost nothing but sweet drinks. Not every skin problem is driven by food. Go back to your doctor with better information than you had before.
The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
