Keto and Sleep:
Why 11pm Is Costing You

Bismillah. The children are finally asleep. The house is quiet. And those two hours after 10pm feel like the only time that belongs to you.

I understand, sister. I have five children. But let me show you what those hours are quietly costing your body.

Sleep is part of the protocol

When sisters come to me, they want to talk about food. Rice, santan, kuih, what to cook for the family. And food matters, it is half of everything I do.

But there is a pillar most of them skip, because it does not feel like healing. It feels like doing nothing. Sleep.

A sister can eat a perfect keto plate all day, and still feel stuck, still crave, still wake up heavy, because her nights are four or five hours long. The food is working. The night is undoing it.

The cravings you fight at 4pm are often decided at 1am.

What one short night does to your sugar

Your body does its repair work while you sleep. It settles your hormones, clears the day, and resets how well your cells respond to insulin for the next morning.

Cut that night short and the next day, your body handles sugar worse. The same breakfast that sat gently yesterday now pushes your blood sugar higher. This has been shown again and again in sleep studies, and not after weeks of poor sleep. After a single short night.

A tired body also runs on stress. When you are short on sleep, cortisol, your stress hormone, stays higher in the morning. Cortisol tells your liver to release sugar into your blood, ready for an emergency that never comes. So a sister can wake up with higher sugar before she has eaten anything at all.

The science, plainly

Insulin resistance is your cells slowly stopping listening to insulin. Food is one door into it. Short sleep is another. Every short night makes your cells listen a little less the next day, and stress hormones add more sugar on top. That is why healing that ignores sleep is always slower than it should be.

Why the cravings come the next day

Two hormones run your appetite. One makes you hungry. One tells you that you are full. After a short night, the hunger hormone rises and the fullness hormone falls.

So the next day you are hungrier than you should be, and harder to satisfy. And a tired brain does not ask for eggs or ikan. It asks for quick energy. Teh tarik. Kuih. A second scoop of rice. Something sweet at three o'clock.

That is not weakness, sister. That is a body that was not allowed to rest, asking for the fastest fuel it knows.

The phone in your hand at midnight

Most late nights are not spent on anything important. They are spent scrolling, because it is the first moment of the day that nobody needs you.

The bright screen tells your brain it is still daytime. It holds back the signal that makes you sleepy, so you stay awake longer than you meant to, and the sleep you do get is lighter. One more video becomes one more hour.

The night was always meant for rest

None of this is new to us. Allah describes our sleep as rest, a mercy, and a sign. And our Prophet, peace be upon him, disliked sleeping before Isha and disliked talking after it (Sahih al-Bukhari 568). He slept early, and he woke in the last part of the night for prayer.

The modern late night is the opposite of that rhythm. When we return to it, sleeping early, we do not only heal our sugar. We make Fajr easier, and tahajjud possible. Our worship becomes lighter because our body is no longer exhausted.

Sister, hear me

This is food, sleep and mechanism, not a diagnosis, and I am a keto coach, not your doctor. If you struggle to sleep for months, wake gasping or snoring heavily, or feel low most days, please speak to your doctor. And if you are on medication for diabetes or blood pressure, never stop or change it on your own.

Three things you can do tonight, for free

You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.

1. Finish your last meal three hours before bed.

If you sleep at 11pm, close the kitchen by 8pm. No supper, no late snack while the children do homework.

Why: when you eat close to bedtime, your body is still busy with the meal while it is trying to rest. Give it three quiet hours and it goes into the night already settled, and you wake up less hungry.

2. Phone face down at 10pm, outside the bedroom if you can.

Charge it in the kitchen or the living room. Set your alarm on a clock, or on the phone placed across the room.

Why: the screen keeps your brain in daytime mode and steals the first hour of your sleep. Without it in your hand, you will fall asleep sooner than you expect.

3. Aim for lights off before midnight, seven hours before you wake.

Count back from your Subuh alarm. If you wake at 5.30am, your night starts at 10.30pm.

Why: seven hours is when the repair work gets done. Protect those hours and tomorrow's cravings shrink before the day has even started.

If you do only those three things this week, watch how your 4pm feels. May Allah make it easy for you, Amin.

If you want someone to cook it for you

Part of why our nights run late is that our days are full. The cooking, the washing, the planning of what everyone will eat tomorrow.

That is why I cook. Kyla With Keto is Singapore's first and only halal keto nasi campur. Heritage Malay and Indonesian dishes, the santan and the rempah kept in, cooked fresh daily, zero preservatives, no rice mound, served on konjac rice. I do the heavy lifting, so your evening has room to rest.

The kitchen is here when you are ready, sister.

The 4 Week Metabolic Reset is where the real change happens. I cook every meal, you eat, and I walk beside you the whole way with private coaching, sleep and all, biiznillah.

Questions sisters ask me

Does lack of sleep raise blood sugar?

Yes. Even one short night makes your body handle sugar less well the next day, and the stress hormones that rise with poor sleep push it up further.

Why do I crave sugar after a bad night?

Short sleep raises the hormone that makes you hungry and lowers the one that tells you that you are full. A tired brain then reaches for the quickest energy it knows, usually something sweet.

How many hours of sleep do I need?

Most adults do best with seven hours or more. Aim to be asleep before midnight, with the phone away from your bed.

Can poor sleep stop me losing weight?

It can slow it down. Short nights raise hunger and stress hormones, so a sister can eat well and still feel stuck if her nights are short.

Is it bad to eat late at night?

Eating close to bedtime keeps your body busy when it should be resting. Finishing your last meal around three hours before sleep usually helps you sleep better and wake less hungry.
