Gula Melaka, Honey and Kurma: Is It Still Sugar?

Bismillah. She swapped white sugar for gula melaka. Her sugar never noticed.

Sister, if you did everything "right" and the clinic printed the same number again, this is for you. You were not undisciplined. You were given the wrong swap.

The swaps she made

She did everything right. Gula melaka in her teh instead of white sugar. A spoon of honey in warm water every morning, "for health." A handful of kurma at night when the craving hit, because natural must mean safe.

Her family praised her for eating healthy. Then the clinic printed the same number again. Same review date. Same fear.

She changed the label. She never changed the load.

The wrong story we were told

The truth is simpler and harder: a sweeter name does not change what lands in your blood. Natural or not, it is still sugar to a body that is already struggling with it.

Halal keto Opor Ayam from Kyla With Keto Singapore, flavour from santan and rempah instead of sugar
O P O R A Y A M . santan and rempah carry the flavour

What each one really is

Gula melaka

Gula melaka, or palm sugar, is mostly sucrose, the same molecule as white sugar. It carries a deeper flavour and small amounts of minerals, but your blood sees sugar.

Honey

Honey is mainly glucose and fructose. It is a natural food, and it is still sugar. A spoon every morning is a spoon of sugar every morning.

Kurma

Dates are naturally very sweet, made mostly of glucose and fructose. Breaking the fast with dates is a beloved Sunnah, and this is not about that. It is about the handful eaten every night as a "healthy snack," day after day.

The science, plainly

Whether sugar comes from a cane, a palm, a bee or a date palm, it is broken down into glucose and fructose in your body. Glucose raises your blood sugar and calls for insulin. For a body that is already insulin resistant, every gram still has to be carried, whatever the name on the packet.

What "lower GI" actually means

GI tells you how fast a food raises your blood sugar. Lower GI means a slower rise, not no rise. Spoon after spoon, cup after cup, your blood still has to carry every gram.

That is why a sister can swap faithfully for months and see no change. She lowered the speed. She never lowered the amount.

Sister, hear me

This is food and mechanism, not medical advice, and I am a keto coach, not your doctor. If you take medication for diabetes, cutting sugar can lower your blood sugar faster than you expect, so speak to your doctor first. And never stop or change your medication on your own.

Three things you can do tonight, for free

You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.

1. Drink your teh and kopi kosong.

No white sugar, no brown sugar, no honey, no gula melaka. Just the drink.

Why: every spoon, whatever its name, is sugar going straight into your blood, and a cup reaches your blood faster than a plate.

2. Let santan and rempah carry the flavour.

When you cook, lean on santan, serai, kunyit, cili and bawang instead of a spoon of sugar to balance the dish.

Why: fat and spice make food deeply satisfying without lifting your sugar, so you do not go looking for sweetness afterwards.

3. Read one label in your kitchen.

Pick up one jar or packet you use every day, a sauce, a spread or a drink powder, and read the sugar line.

Why: most of the sugar we eat is not the sugar we add. Once you see where it hides, you cannot unsee it.

May Allah make it easy for you, Amin.

If you want someone to cook it for you

You already know a new name was never the answer. Changing the plate, every day, is the work.

That is why I cook. Kyla With Keto is Singapore's first and only halal keto nasi campur. Heritage Malay and Indonesian dishes, protein at the centre, cooked fresh daily with zero artificial preservatives, served on konjac rice instead of a rice mound. I do the heavy lifting. You eat.

The kitchen is here when you are ready, sister.

The 4 Week Metabolic Reset is where the real change happens. I cook every meal, you eat, and I walk beside you the whole way with private WhatsApp coaching, biiznillah.

Questions sisters ask me

Is gula melaka healthier than white sugar?

Gula melaka is mostly sucrose, the same sugar as white sugar, with a little more flavour and a few minerals. For blood sugar, it behaves much like white sugar. A lower GI number means a slower rise, not no rise.

Is honey safe for type 2 diabetes?

Honey is mainly glucose and fructose, which are sugars. It raises blood sugar like other sugars do. If you have type 2 diabetes, honey is not a free food just because it is natural.

Can I eat kurma if I am diabetic?

Kurma is naturally very sweet and high in sugar. Breaking your fast with dates is a beloved Sunnah, and that is not what this article is about. The problem is handfuls eaten every night as a healthy snack. Speak to your doctor about what amount suits you.

What does lower GI mean?

GI measures how fast a food raises blood sugar. A lower GI food raises it more slowly, but it still raises it. For a body that already struggles with sugar, the total amount still matters.

What can I use instead of sugar in my teh or kopi?

The simplest swap is to drink it kosong, with no sugar at all. Most people find their taste adjusts within a couple of weeks and sweet drinks start to taste too sweet.

Qur'an 2 : 201
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar
"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
